As we wrap up Hand Therapy Week, let’s talk about what it means to be a Certified Hand Therapist.
You wouldn’t go to Fricker’s and order a cheeseburger, would you? Or Dunkin and order just water to drink? The point is certain places specialize in certain things. A Certified Hand Therapist specializes in all things hand, wrist, elbow, and shoulder. They pride themselves on knowing the anatomy and physiology of how the upper extremity functions in day-to-day activity. More importantly, if it ISN’T functioning correctly, how to fix it? In fact, CHTs have to pass an exam to prove they know their stuff, an exam that has a pass rate of only 50%.
CHTs work closely with doctors and surgeons to successfully manage upper extremity conditions such as trigger finger, carpal tunnel syndrome, tennis elbow, crush injuries, amputations, post-stroke rehab, and general hand pain, to name a few. They use ultrasound, e-stim, dry needling, and many other modalities to reduce pain and improve the way your hand works. CHTs are also skilled at making custom splints and braces.
So if you have an injury or ailment specific to your hand, don’t settle for anyone—demand to see someone who knows the hand inside and out. Request to see a Certified Hand Therapist.
