October is Sensory Awareness Month, a time dedicated to recognizing and understanding the vital role our sensory systems play in daily life – and how challenges in sensory processing can affect individuals of all ages.

We work with children and adults who may experience difficulties with how their brains interpret and respond to sensory information. Whether it’s the sense of touch, balance, movement, sight, sound, taste, smell, or body awareness, these systems are essential for everything from learning and communication to emotional regulation and motor skills.

What Is Sensory Processing?
Sensory processing refers to the way the nervous system receives messages from the senses and turns them into appropriate responses. For some people, this process doesn’t happen smoothly.  They might be overly sensitive to certain stimuli (like loud noises or bright lights), or they might not respond to sensory input as expected (like not noticing pain or movement).

How Can PTs, OTs, and SLPs Help?

  • Occupational Therapists (OTs) support sensory regulation through strategies that promote focus, comfort, and independence in daily activities.
  • Physical Therapists (PTs) work on balance, coordination, and movement – all of which are closely tied to sensory input from the body and environment.
  • Speech-Language Pathologists (SLPs) can help with feeding challenges, communication issues, and social engagement, which may all be impacted by sensory differences.

Why Sensory Awareness Matters
Understanding sensory needs can make a world of difference – not just for those with sensory processing differences, but for families, educators, and communities as a whole. During Sensory Awareness Month, we encourage everyone to learn more, ask questions, and celebrate the unique ways we all experience the world.

If you or a loved one is facing challenges related to sensory processing, know that help is available – and you are not alone.

Let’s continue to build awareness, promote inclusion, and support sensory-friendly spaces for everyone.
