When we visit the dentist, we are given reclined chairs to comfortably lie on while our dental work is completed.  Have you ever thought about the tension and strain put on those doing the dental work though?  It has been suggested that dental hygiene students experience musculoskeletal disorders at higher rates than students in other health professions (https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/24563051/).

The National Library of Medicine states dental hygienists spend half of their shift in 30 (or more) degrees of trunk flexion, and 86% of their day in 30 (or more) degrees of neck flexion.  Spending a large portion of their shift in these restricted positions, not only affects the muscles in charge of their posture, but also often leads to neck, shoulder, and back pain.  The effect of this can be so significant for many.  Research estimates 18% of hygienists leave the dental field due to musculoskeletal disorders affecting their daily lives.

Pharmacy workers are not immune to this body strain either.  Staff are often on their feet for the full shift, and must squat down to reach medicine, coolers, and medication bottles on lower shelves, as well as reaching above their heads for prescriptions on top shelves.  There is a constant twisting and turning of the wrist muscles to open and close pill bottles while also having their necks bent downward to count the pills being placed into patient prescription orders.

Ensuring there is appropriate equipment in each field is crucial.  Ergonomic dental chairs and anti-fatigue pharmacy floor mats with height adjustable pill-counting tables can reduce some of the strain that comes along with the nature of these professions.  What more can be done?  Fortunately, there are many adjustments that can be made!
